The first six years of their married life, Catherine and George lived on a farm near Festina which they had purchased from George's parents. Five children were born: Sophia, William, Bernard, Katherine and Henry. In October of 1887 they sold their farm to Catherine's father and moved to the Ossian vicinity where George was a carpenter. Six more children were born: Joseph, Mary, George, Frank, Dortha and Theodore. Catherine died at the age of 38. In 1903 George and the younger children moved to Canute, Oklahoma to be near a married daughter who no doubt helped raise the children. Later William, Katherine and Henry moved to Oklahoma, but Bernard decided to remain in Iowa.
