*Notes from Census data: 1850 census, Lancaster, Erie Co., N.Y. (Same county as Buffalo) listed Lawrence, age 34 born in Germany, staying with the Frankenberry family.
In 1860 listed as Lara Hopman.
1880 census, Pleasant Valley, Carroll Co., Iowa listed Lawerence (63) and Mary (56) Hoffman and sons Joseph (19) and John (17). Lawrence was listed as born in N.Y. and his parents in Bayern. Mary's parents were both listed as born in France.
Lawrence Hoffman worked in a tannery in the Lancaster New York area. They moved to Winneshiek County, Iowa, and in 1874 they moved to Pleasant Valley Township, Carroll County, and purchased 80 acres of land.

Lorenz Hoffman came from Germany in 1830 and located in New York state where he held the position of engineer in a tanery for many years. Lorenz & wife Anna Maria Laparl lived in Lancaster, Erie Co., NY about 1850-1868. They moved from Buffalo to Winnecheik County, Iowa and later to Carroll, Iowa. Land records in Decorah, Iowa show he bought land March 5, 1868 and sold September 1873. The story goes that he died from frozen feet after serving jury duty in Carroll County, Iowa.
